About Us

Mission

The Azalea Regional Library System’s mission is to provide constituents with equal access to educational, informational, and recreational print and digital resources and services in order to encourage life-long learning, further development of an informed citizenry, and support the innovative, academic, and creative endeavors of the communities it serves.

Vision

The Azalea Regional Library System envisions a connected and vibrant community where all individuals have equitable access to a wealth of knowledge, resources, and opportunities. We strive to foster an environment where curiosity and creativity flourish, empowering lifelong learners to thrive in a digital world. By promoting literacy, supporting academic growth, and nurturing innovative thinking, we aim to inspire a well-informed, engaged, and forward-thinking citizenry that drives positive change in our communities.

History

The Azalea Regional Library System has a long and rich history, spanning almost 70 years.

  • 1952: Officials from Jasper and Morgan Counties sign an agreement to form the Jasper-Morgan Regional Library

  • 1954: The Eatonton-Putnam County Library joins the Jasper-Morgan Regional Library. The new system is commonly called the Jasper-Morgan-Putnam Regional Library, though not officially changed in the constitution and bylaws.

  • 1958: The Jasper-Morgan Regional Library officially changes its name to the Uncle Remus Regional Library and officially includes the Eatonton-Putnam County Library. The Regional Library serves Jasper, Morgan, and Putnam Counties.

  • 1959: The Hancock County Library becomes part of the Uncle Remus Regional Library.

  • 1986: Walton County joins the Uncle Remus Regional Library. The three Walton libraries located in the City of Loganville, City of Social Circle, and the City of Monroe are now a part of the library system. The system is renamed the Uncle Remus Regional Library System.

  • 1992: The Greene County Library joins the Uncle Remus Regional Library System.

  • 2012: Walnut Grove Library opens to the public. This is the fourth Walton County library, located in the City of Walnut Grove. The regional system is now composed of nine member libraries in six counties.

  • 2020: The Azalea Regional Library System is established. The Regional Board of Trustees unanimously vote to change the regional system name from Uncle Remus Regional Library System to Azalea Regional Library System, a name chosen to reflect a moniker that was more representative of the six diverse and unique counties that comprise the regional system. The azalea is the official wildflower for the State of Georgia (adopted April 19, 1979) and blooms from March through August in all parts of the state. Various native species can be found in all of the counties that make up the Azalea Regional Library System, displaying shades of white, pink, orange, scarlet, yellow, and purple.

  • 2022: The Azalea Regional Library System was awarded Georgia’s 2021 Public Library of the Year. The system was recognized for their programming and services that demonstrate knowledge and care for their communities, despite coronavirus pandemic limitations. Azalea Regional Library System reimagined its services and programs during COVID-19, obtaining grants and launching new services in communities that could otherwise not afford them.

  • 2024: The Sparta-Hancock County Library was a finalist for the prestigious National Medal for Museum and Library Service for their Bee Kind Room which promotes emotional well-being and supports family literacy and economic development. The National Medal is awarded annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The Azalea Regional Library System is governed by a Regional Board of Trustees comprised of representatives from every local member library board. The nine local member library boards are comprised of County, City, and Board of Education appointees. Every member library has a designated Chairperson and the nine local Chairs comprise the Regional Board of Chairs, which hire the Regional Director and preside over executive session matters. The Regional Board of Trustees establish policy for library services and programs, approve budgets, accept the annual audit, evaluate the Director, and provide regional system oversight. Daily operations, facility management, and supervision of staff is vested in the Regional Director.

Regional Board meetings are scheduled in January, April, August, and October. Local member library boards set their own meeting schedules. Public announcements for Regional and local board meetings are posted online under Public Notices and Information. Member library meetings are also announced in legal organs two weeks prior to a scheduled meeting.

The Azalea Regional Library System will follow the Georgia Open Meetings Laws (O.C.G.A. § 50-14-1). The Regional Executive Director will insure compliance with the notification requirements of the Open Meetings Law.

Members of the public who wish to address the Regional Board or any Local Board may do so at any scheduled public session Regional Board or Local Board meeting, provided they sign up by 4:30 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to the scheduled meeting. The thirty (30) minute session will be equally divided among scheduled speakers, with each individual limited to no more than five (5) minutes. The public may sign up at any member library within AZRLS by providing their name, contact information, amount of time requested, and the subject they wish to address.
