Live Observation Bee Hive & Pollinator Gardens

The Sparta-Hancock County Library is proud to be home to the first live observation beehive housed within a public library in the State of Georgia! This vibrant hive, which can be viewed during regular business hours, serves as a vital educational tool to promote the importance of bees in a healthy ecosystem and to encourage the practice of personal beekeeping. To ensure the health and success of the colony, the hive is expertly maintained by the Lake Country Beekeepers Association.

The hive is supported by the Sparta-Hancock Pollinator Gardens (Garden #311), located at 8984 East Broad Street. Originally established as a primary food source for the library bees, the gardens have grown into a teeming community sanctuary designed to attract native butterflies and migrating Monarchs.

Visitors can explore a rich landscape of nectar and host plants, including:

  • Trees & Shrubs: Magnolia, Azaleas, Holly Bushes, Crape Myrtles, and Cherry Trees.

  • Flowers & Herbs: Fennel, Coreopsis, Clover, assorted annuals, wildflowers, and native grasses.

Whether you are interested in the inner workings of the hive or the flutter of butterflies among the herbs, our gardens offer a unique hands-on look at nature in action. To schedule a tour of the facility, please contact the library.
