Members of the Beehive Book Club recently gathered at The Sparta Mercantile to discuss their latest book club selection, ‘Mona’s Eyes’ by Thomas Schlesser.
The novel follows a young French girl, Mona and her grandfather, Henry, who she affectionately calls, “Dade.” After Mona experiences a temporary loss of sight, her grandfather introduces her to the deeper world of art - encouraging her to not only see, but to truly observe, interpret, and remember. Together they embark on a meaningful journey through some of Paris’s most renowned art museums, including the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and the Centre Pompidou.
As their story unfolds, readers witness the emotional growth of Mona, her parents, and her grandfather, all while facing the uncertainty surrounding her condition. Through Mona’s experience, the novel highlights the richness of art—its color, technique, symbolism, and emotional depth—while reminding readers that there is often far more beneath the surface than what we first perceive.
The Beehive Book Club enjoyed a thoughtful discussion, reflecting on the novel’s themes of perception, relationships, and the beauty found in truly seeing the world around us.
The Beehive Book Club meets monthly at The Sparta Mercantile on the fourth (4th) Thursday of every month. The next meeting will be on Thursday, May 28, 2026 at 5 PM. The next book selection will be ‘Skin and Bones’ by Renee Watson. We encourage anyone interested to join us! Please contact the Sparta-Hancock County Library at (706) 444-5389 with any questions.
